Old fortified castle originally built in the 11th century by Count Foulques Nerra who was one of the founders of Anjou; he fortified the entire rich province through 27 castles and forts including this one, marking the southern line of its defense. Today listed as a Historic Monument, the building underwent several alterations in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries before being burned during the French Revolution. Purchased and renovated at the beginning of the 19th century, Château de Passavant became an important wine estate recognized among the Côteaux du Layon. The road passes under the access bridge to the castle.

The last La Rochejaquelein owner of this castle died in 1897, he left the estate which bore his name to one of his nieces, Marguerite d'Arlot de Saint-Sand, born Rochechouart. The Château de la Rochejaquelein is currently the property of his descendants.

In 1635, Marie de la Tour d'Auvergne, Duchess of La Trémoïlle, demolished the castle that was on the site and built this more modern castle. His family then moved to Paris and abandoned him. Since then it has been used as barracks and prison. It is now public property and was restored in the 1990s.

The castle of the Dukes of Trémoille is located in Thouars, on a hill overlooking the Thouet. This place rich in history can only be visited during heritage days, but its location offers a breathtaking view of the old town of Thouars and the meanders of the Thouet.
