This surprising sight, which immediately makes you think of a city sunken in the sea (who has never heard of 'Atlantis'), is what visitors see at the end of the headland that separates the northern 'Laguna di Ponente' from the southern 'Laguna di Levante'. Even early in human history, people were clever enough to harness the power of the elements - which could be a threat on the one hand, but also helpful on the other. A total of nine tidal mills once diligently did their work here.

In the fifteenth century, 9 were built, all developed in line in the lagoon. They were built by the Sienese, with the function of grinding the grain (which was brought to the mill with the so-called barchini of the area) to produce flour. At the time they worked thanks to the force of the water (which entered and exited the lagoon with ebbs and flows every 6 hours from the tombolo of Giannella causing a hydraulic phenomenon of vast proportions) with which the millstones were turned. A century and a half later, precisely in 1557, Orbetello became the capital of the State of the Presìdi, created by the will of the King of Spain Philip I. It was therefore under Spanish rule that the sail blades were added to the mill, so that the force of the many winds (four mistral and five sirocco) that beat on the lagoon could be exploited. The 9 mills placed in line by the inhabitants of Orbetello faced a huge production by making the most of both the movement of the currents and that of the winds, thus determining a phenomenon of hydraulic and wind engineering of great historical importance. Today, of the nine mills mentioned above, only one remains, recently restored.

The road to follow in the pine forest is beautiful with two types of routes, one running along the lagoon and being able to admire the landscape as well as the wonderful pink flamingos, the other running along the part towards the sea where different outlets take you to admire the beautiful beach

La Feniglia can be reached easily on the beach using the dirt road accessible to all bicycles, moderating the speed according to the vehicle you are using. If you go inside the paths you could reach some houses for bird watching, but don't get your hopes up, it is very difficult to see them especially pelicans. Sometimes you may find paths closed by the feniglia consortium due to the birds' breeding season

La Feniglia: a wonderful strip of land that extends between the lagoon and the sea. Traveling along the road inside the pine forest, on the left there are several openings that lead to the sea and shortly afterwards you find yourself on a pristine beach. On the right you can head towards the lagoon, where you can find the huts dedicated to birdwatching. The route is completely flat and suitable for everyone. Perfect place for a relaxing walk by bike or on foot..

The only one left of the 9 fifteenth-century Spanish mills that once dotted the lagoon; initially they worked thanks to the wave motion due to the cyclic entry of the waters into the lagoon, but later, due to needs perhaps also due to the structural modification of the lagoon, they were transformed in the course of the sixteenth century into windmills. The surviving specimen stands a short distance (a few tens of meters) from the end of the isthmus on which the center of Orbetello stands, on the north side of the Leopoldina dam (the bridge that connects Orbetello to the Argentario).

The Convent of the Passionist friars is located on the top of the Argentario. Here you will find the typical herbal bitters of the Passionist friars for sale. Opposite is the self-service restaurant in the middle of the Mediterranean scrub with typical Maremma cuisine. Continuing along the road you will arrive at the top from which you can enjoy a fabulous view of the sea and from where you can see the islands of Giannutri and Giglio.

The complex constitutes the mother house of the Congregation of the Passionist Fathers and is made up of a convent and the church. Construction work began in 1733 and was completed in 1737. The façade, built in 1856, has a neoclassical appearance. The interior preserves some important works: the Madonna and Child handing over the project of the convent to Saint Paul of the Cross, by Pietro Aldi (1880), which can be taken as a manifesto of the congregation; the "Presentation of Mary in the Temple", by Sebastiano Conca; the "Madonna and Child holding the Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph in the background", by Pompeo Batoni. The image called "Madonna di Monte Argentario" from the Roman school of the 18th century is very venerated. On the altar of the right transept there is a canvas with an image of the Magdalene from the 18th century and, on the left altar a Saint Michael, a copy of the subject of the same name by Guido Reni from the Capuchin Church in Rome. In the crypt there are both the statue of the founder of the order (in travertine) and a bas-relief, also in travertine, representing the arrival at the Argentario of San Paolo della Croce. Finally, inside the church you can admire a bronze urn with the remains of the young passionist the venerable Galileo Nicolini by the sculptor Tito Amodei[1]. On December 12, 2000, surprisingly and without warning, to the amazement and emotion of the religious people present, Pope John Paul II stopped to pray in the convent church.[2] The place was also particularly loved by Susanna Agnelli (mayor of Monte Argentario from 1974 to 1984), so much so that, following her express wish, she wanted her funeral to be celebrated there.[3]

The Spanish Mill is the only survivor of the nine mills built in the Orbetello lagoon during the 16th century. It has a circular shape with a conical roof and is located within the lagoon. In the past it exploited both the energy of the wind and the movement of water to grind the grain which was transported here with the "barchini", typical boats of the area. The mill, renovated and consolidated during the Spanish period, can only be visited by boat.
