Wonderfully beautiful gorge... but slippery in wet weather

Beautiful gorge...the trail can be very slippery in wet weather...

This is the classic case in which we can say that the path is... UNIQUE!! It must be seen and experienced to be able to appreciate it... bring oxygen... you will be breathless 😁💖💖💖. It can be done carefully on foot... while if you are on a MTB... think VERY carefully before doing so 😉

Val Febbraro, in the upper Val San Giacomo, is a long valley full of suggestive corners: the waterfalls, the pastures and the rushing waters of the homonymous stream give this place an atmosphere of great peace and tranquillity. It is the ideal starting point for reaching some of the most famous places in these mountains, such as Pian dei Cavalli, the Bianco lake and the Balisco pass. The valley is quite wild and there are no refuges or accommodation facilities of any kind, therefore it is advisable to equip yourself with everything you need before leaving.

The current geomorphological aspect of the territory is the result of the erosive and modeling action of the glaciers. Numerous orographic terraces arranged at various altitudes on the entire left side of the Mera river are recognizable. Above the alluvial strip, the appearance is characterized by the elevation of some rocky ridges, by areas branching even with large boulders, by rocky walls, gorges, granite erratic boulders and by a watershed that separates the ridges from the lower slopes of the mountains . On the top of the sheepskin rocks, striated and smoothed, in the center and along the sides of the glacial valleys are the Marmitte dei Giganti, also called glacial wells, of very variable dimensions and shapes and contiguous to intercommunicating channels, basins and basins.

The Cardinello gorge takes its name, which means "pin of the valley", from the nearby Monte Cardine. It is assumed that the first attempt to obtain a passage in the gorge took place in 1643. The construction of a passable road, however, was completed only after 1709, with the construction of tunnels, parapets and avalanche-protection canopies. The Cardinello had already cost the lives of several pack animals, soldiers and pilgrims, and continued to be the most dangerous stretch of the via Spluga. The transit of the French army in December 1800, led by General McDonald, therefore caused a stir. Despite the incessant storm 15,000 men managed to reach Splügen. The enterprise involved the loss of many soldiers, overwhelmed by avalanches and slipped into the abyss.
