The ancient walled village of Novilara, surrounded by solid defense walls, is located about 4 km away. from Pesaro, in a dominant position on the top of one of the hills that separate the Foglia valley from that of the Metauro. It was built to replace an older castle, probably built further east around 1000: perhaps because it was now too old and small, perhaps because it was ruined and crumbling due to the constant wars, the Novilara castle was abandoned in the early 1300s and rebuilt later. to the west, on the hill where it still stands.
