In the second half of the 13th century, Charles I of Anjou defines it as a fortress of strategic importance for the defense of the kingdom. In 1466 it became the property of the Guarini Dukes, Lords of Poggiardo, who expanded the structure over the course of several centuries, progressively transforming it from a fortress into a fortified residential residence.
