The Amendolea river originates in the Aspromonte park at 1,720 meters above sea level, begins its course between cliffs and gorges and creates wonderful waterfalls. The name seems to derive from the presence of almond trees along its course. After about 39 kilometers it flows into the Ionian Sea at Condofuri Marina.

The Vallescura waterfall is located near Gambarie d'Aspromonte. It is located along the "Path of the Fairies."

The Maesano waterfalls are four waterfalls, fed by the Amendolea river (in fact some call them the Amendolea waterfalls). This waterfall is the most popular in the area.

National Park of Aspromonte Aspromonte! A beautiful cultural and human nature experience The Aspromonte territory includes the southern stretch of the Apennine chain and its soil is of crystalline granite. The Aspromonte forms a huge pyramid that rises on the lake and reaches a height of 2000 meters. The park includes numerous peaks and plateaus formed by marine sedimentation. Many watercourses (Fiumare) flow in the area and many animal species can also be found here (wolf, peregrine falcon, eagle owl, hawk). Wide and lush forests cover the protected area: beech, silver fir, black pine, holm oak, chestnut tree and the Mediterranean maquis. Rare plant and animal species also live in the park: e.g. the Bonelli's eagle and the fern Woodwardia radicans. The protected area is located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and in its territory you can find important historical, artistic and archaeological sites and testimonies of Archaic, Classical, Greek and Medieval cultures. Maesano Waterfalls The Amendolea Waterfalls, also called Maesano Waterfalls, are located in the heart of Aspromonte and were originally called “U schiucciu da Spana”, the “Spana Waterfall”. They are undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations for tourists, nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts. An impressive spectacle of nature The Aspromonte area is rich in water and exciting waterfalls. The most visited are those of Maesano; the route to get there is scenic, breathtaking and quite short, but also a bit difficult due to landslides. Before you reach the waterfall, you will pass through beech and pine forests and then you will almost catch your breath as you watch the power of the water rushing down from the peak. The falls feature three plunges into pools carved into the rock by the force of the water; in summer, after the ascent, a dip in the last of the three pools with clear water is a must and a pleasure.
