An impressive gorge with narrow rock formations that, from above, appears as a striking incision in the landscape. Access is via a panoramic trail that opens up far beyond the coastline.

Super beautiful gorge. Most visitors to the Avakas Gorge are dropped off by jeeps right at the entrance and then walk with their hiking guide to the narrowest point, which is barely 15 minutes away. In this section, you have to expect a real crowd in high season. It is also worth hiking further up - it is a little less spectacular there, but also quieter and there are significantly fewer other hikers...

The Avakas Gorge begins about 1 km before the small river Avgas flows into the Mediterranean and leads inland. It is about 3 km long and in parts only about 4 m wide with rock walls over 30 m high. The small river had carved its way through the limestone over the course of thousands of years. When there is heavy rainfall, the Avgas becomes a raging torrent due to the narrowness of the gorge. Warning signs at the entrance to the gorge alert hikers to this. The way back can be taken either through the gorge or along a path outside, which is, however, 10 km long. The Avakas Gorge is characterized by a variety of plants. In addition to pines, cypresses, Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea) and wild fig trees, Centaurea akamantis, an endemic purple-pink knapweed that only occurs in the Avakas Gorge and the neighboring Argaki ton Koufon Gorge, also thrives here.

If you are travelling in the east of Cyprus, you should not miss a visit to the Avakas Gorge. Depending on the time of year, the gorge is more or less full of water. If it is raining heavily, you should postpone your visit, as there could be rock falls and the riverbed becomes a raging river and the stones are slippery. Either wear hiking boots or other sturdy shoes that can get wet and protect you from slipping. The walls of the gorge are steep and up to 30 metres high. A visit is also possible in midsummer, as the gorge provides shade and cools the air. As with any hike you undertake in Cyprus, you should always have water with you.

A popular tourist attraction in Cyprus is the Avakas Gorge, which lies in the southwest of the Akamas Peninsula. A hiking trail leads through the narrow gorge, which is only 2 meters wide in places and has rock walls over 30 meters high. The gorge was formed by the small river Avgas, which turns into a raging torrent after heavy rainfall.

The Avakas Gorge is about 3 km long and only about 4 m wide in parts and has cliffs over 30 m high with beautiful rock formations, very impressive. I rode my bike from the entrance about 1 km to the actual gorge and then a few hundred meters into the gorge to the creek crossing. From then on it looks like you can only get on as a hiker. I've also read that you pay €1 to enter, but it's definitely worth it. I didn't have to pay anything when I visited, but there were warning signs at the entrance because of the past rains. I rode my mountain bike into the gorge. I don't know if this is allowed, but there was no sign prohibiting cyclists either.
