Beautiful place, both touristy, calm and wild

Blausteinsee Water Trail (Eschweiler, near Aachen) At Blausteinsee (Eschweiler, near Aachen), in addition to the Omerbach/Inde Water Trail, a second water trail was developed with the Eschweiler local group and the Friends of Nature NRW. In recent decades, a lake has been created at this former open-cast mine, which is known as a local recreation area and leisure and bathing lake. The focus of this waterway is on the water-specific relevant topic of this new lake:   The creation of the (artificial) lake as an open-cast mining pit The (bathing) water quality Nature conservation and recreational use (feeding birds, garbage and keeping dogs on a leash) Landscape change and recultivation (mining and renewable energies) Hydrology and groundwater (fresh air corridors and circulation of the lake as well as groundwater lowering) In autumn 2018, the route of the waterway and the possible information boards and their contents were developed during several inspections.

At Blaustein Lake you will find great local recreational opportunities that you would otherwise have to get on a plane for. Beautiful lake but very crowded in summer.

It's exciting how the lake has changed over the years.

The total filling volume is around 25 million cubic meters. Filling began in 1994. Every year, 3.8 million m³ of water is pumped into the lake from swamp wells in the Inden opencast mine so that it maintains its current level. According to the Aachen city region, this supply of swamp water will be necessary until 2061.

The Blausteinsee is located north of Eschweiler, in the area of the former open-cast brown coal mine Zukunft-West. A local recreation area was created here through recultivation, with the remaining hole filling with water from 1984-2005.
