An old sign bears the indication "COVALCA quarry". After a few meters the quarry appears, approximately 150 meters wide, approximately 250 meters long, with leucitite ("flint") walls 15/20 meters high. The flow was formed by a local event, i.e. the leakage of lava material coming from a lateral fissure of the Lazio volcano, the same event at the origin of the very nearby "Nenni" quarry flow, still functioning for bitumen production. http://www.wwfroma11.it/documenti/cava%20laurentina.htm

The suggestive landscape of the "red" lake of Solforata in the Decima Malafede Nature Reserve and the mythical Albunea, mentioned in the pages of Virgil's Aeneid (VII book, 81-89), recall the legendary events of the formation of the Latin population. This was supposed to be the sanctuary where the god Faun would appear to the Latin king to announce the arrival of Aeneas, predestined to become the husband of his daughter Lavinia and the progenitor of the Giulia family to which Caesar and the first Roman emperors would belong.

The site of the Pomezia solfatara occupies what, until the early 1800s, was a sulfur quarry. One of the lakes is particularly impressive because it appears all white, almost as if it were an expanse of milk or salt.

It is the largest of the lakes of the solfatara, or rather sulfur, of Pomezia, inside the Decima Malafede Park.
