The Mondmilchloch (Mondmilk Hole) is a karst cave in the Pilatus Massif (Emmental Alps) in Switzerland. It is the type locality of the so-called Mondmilch (moon milk). Location and Access: The Mondmilchloch is located on the south side of the Widderfeld mountain range at an altitude of 1,710 m above sea level. The entrance to the cave is only visible when standing directly in front of it. The small stream that springs from the cave can serve as a guide. From the buildings of the Birchboden Alp (1,610 m above sea level), a path marked with orange dots leads, initially level, then slightly uphill, over pastureland, scree slopes, and through strips of forest to the cave entrance. Cave Description The cave is 170 m long and 22 m wide.[1] The hall-like anteroom and the transition area lead to the crevice-shaped part of the cave (approx. 40 m). At 52 m, there is a wedged boulder. From 57 to 62 m, there is a low section that only allows progress on all fours. You reach the first waterfall at a height of 3.3 m. This is followed by a gently rising section with small steps until, at about 80 m, a side passage opens on the right, from which water flows. Now you reach the narrowest passage, approximately 20 cm wide (the "mousetrap"). At 100 m, there is the second waterfall, 2.2 m high.
