The Romans recognized and took advantage of the fact that this is the narrowest point on the Aare between Lake Thun and the confluence of the Aare and the Rhine. Here they could connect the two banks with a single tree trunk. The resulting bridge became an important part of the road connection from Vindonissa to Augusta Raurica.

The Aare Gorge in Brugg is 1400 m long. 15 m wide at the narrowest point, where it reaches a depth of 17 m and is therefore deeper than wide. The Romans already built the first bridges here that were protected from flooding. The houses in the old town are built directly on the rocks, making the gorge appear deeper. Always impressive to observe this integrated architecture of man and nature from the old bridge.
