The castle in the hamlet of Balliswil is a country estate of the Montenach family. The largely intact, impressive ensemble of the country estate consists of a manor house, a tenant's house, a chapel and an outbuilding. Three avenues lead to the hamlet. Unfortunately, a tour is not possible. The entire property is largely surrounded by a wall.

The extent (area and quantity) of the sights cannot be listed or described in detail here. You have to see them and ideally plan a whole day to get even a rudimentary impression of the Roman-era facilities. But the old town of Avenches is also worth a visit. It is beautifully decorated and offers a lot to feast your eyes on and to quench your hunger and thirst. It goes without saying that the view of the Jura and the lakes is great (ideally from the castle courtyard), the town was certainly built on the hill...back then, less for the view (or perhaps precisely because of that)! The Porte de l'Est and the Roman city walls of Avenches are important remains from the Roman period in Switzerland. The Porte de l'Est is part of the ancient city gates of Aventicum and once marked the eastern entrance to the city. The Roman city walls, which ran around the city with their imposing walls and towers, served to defend and protect the ancient settlement. Today, the remains of the Porte de l'Est and the city walls are an important part of Avenches' archaeological heritage and attract visitors who want to explore the history of the region.

The hill of Montagny, a strategic point that controlled part of the Broye valley, has been inhabited since ancient times. But due to the lack of systematic excavations, it is impossible to obtain precise information about this period. Several archaeological discoveries confirm that the region has been inhabited since the Mesolithic period. The first evidence dates from the beginning of the 12th century, when Ulrich, Lord of Belp and Montagny, is mentioned under the patronage of Zaehringen. The origin of the lordship of Montagny certainly dates back to 1146. Ulrich's two sons, Conrad of Montagny and Rudolph of Belp, lived in a primitive castle in Montagny. At the time, it was a square tower to which a wooden structure was attached, surrounded by a palisade or rampart.

The East Gate, fascinating with its 4 traffic lanes: 2 pedestrians and 2 for tanks with a place in the center of the wall so that they can turn around. Frankly, modern times have nothing to envy.

The climb up the tower is quite dizzying, but what a view!!
