Beautiful, entertaining boat trip to Ioanninia island

Drakolimni is the name of several alpine or sub-alpine lakes in the Epirus region of northwestern Greece: those in Mount Tymfi (Astraka) and Smolikas are the most famous. According to local folk tales, the lakes used to be inhabited by dragons who fought each other by throwing pine trees and rocks, creating the peculiar landscape and giving the lakes their names. This Drakolimni lake near the Astraka hut is at an altitude of 2050 m above sea level on the Tymfi mountain range in the Vikos Aoos National Park. It is dominated by the nearby Ploskos and Astraka peaks. The lake is a 5 hour walk from the village of Papingo and about an hour from the Astraka hut and is a popular trekking destination in the Vikos-Aoos National Park. The lake is inhabited by a mountain newt and is under nature protection.

Around the Robozisee (which has dried up in summer and can then be admired as a green high pasture) there is a dam wall. Mountain cattle can often be found around the lake.
