The necropolis dates primarily from Roman times and, apart from its geographical proximity and the repurposing of its infrastructure, has no connection to the Church of the Five Virgins. These virgins are said to have been martyred here during the Ottoman period; the five water outlets of the spring beneath the large plane tree commemorate them.

This is drinking water for a lot of people, don't swim in it.

On the circular route you walk past the property.

A highly recommended hike. There's plenty of parking (extra touristy 🫣😅). Restrooms are also available, and they were quite clean. The signage is a bit outdated, but if you have a cell phone or something else with you, you'll find your way easily. The route is quite challenging; the first 1.5km involve a good 200 meters of elevation gain. The view, however, is simply stunning. Anyone who wants to see wildlife will definitely get their money's worth here. We saw several mountain goats, vultures including their nests, and various other small animals. The highlight is the chapel, which unfortunately was somewhat damaged when we visited. We definitely recommend this route and consider it a must-do for anyone in the area or on Crete.

As of September 25, unfortunately, many items in the church were destroyed, and it smelled of awful urine. Plastic bottles were everywhere, the contents of which also suggested urine. It's a great little memorial high up with a great view. It's a shame what's been done to it.
