Splendid panorama of Lake Arancio, an artificial basin built between 1949 and 1952, in an area between the territories of the municipalities of Sambuca, Santa Margherita and Sciacca.

Lake Arancio is an artificial basin built between 1949 and 1952 in an area between the territories of the municipalities of Sambuca, Santa Margherita and Sciacca. It can contain up to 32 million cubic meters of water and has a width of 400 hectares. It was created thanks to the blocking of the waters of the Carboj river through a dam. When the water level drops it is possible to see the ruins of the ancient fort of Mazzallakkar, built by the Arabs in 830.

Very nice place to visit (I personally ride it in mtb) 11 km in the middle of nature among trees and birds. The basin was built between 1969 and 1981 and intended for the collection of water from the Naro river. The dam blocks the course of the river about 20 km from the mouth, and is located in Stretta del Molino San Giovanni. It is connected with the Furore dam, also in the territory of Naro and built by blocking the path of the Grancifone stream (or Burraito river), a tributary of the Naro river. Its waters are mainly used for irrigation of the neighboring countryside. The dam is surrounded by a forest often a destination for tourists, especially on holidays. In the past it was used as a facility for rowing competitions, from this point of view it experienced its moment of maximum splendor in 1991 when the XVI European rowing championships were held in the dam.

The Magazzolo Lake is an artificial lake formed by the damming of the Magazzolo river through the Castello dam. The project dates back to the late sixties but it took ten years to build this dam between 1975 and 1985. The waters of this lake are used for civil and agricultural use and serve various municipalities in the province of Agrigento.

Forestry station used for forest surveillance. Its position offers a wonderful view of Lake Arancio and Sambuca di Sicilia.

Along the third stage of the Sicily Divide you cross the Magazzolo lake before arriving in Bivona. The artificial lake is a leisure place for the locals and a panoramic point that every Divider will want to photograph.
