Calling them ruins is too strong a word… There's almost nothing left to see, but the hike is still worthwhile.

An old castle and ruins you can stroll past, overlooking the bay and the bicycle bridge.

The castle, probably built between 1361 and 1365, was used by the Danes to monitor maritime traffic in the Kalmar Strait. In 1436, the castle was burned down by the Swedes.

Drottningskär's Castle was largely built in the last decade of the 17th century and is one of the country's most important defensive fortifications, a complete, well-preserved fortress from the time when Sweden was a great power. The citadel has a large granite keep with a battery deck, powder magazine and quarters. The four bastions are named after the queens Maria, Christina, Hedvig and Ulrica. Since 1895, Drottningskär no longer plays an active role in the Swedish defense system. Drottningskär's castle can be reached daily all year round by car ferry to Aspö. Drottningskärs Kastell is a fully preserved fortress from the late 17th century. It stands on the island of Aspö, around 5 kilometers south of Karlskrona and is one of the most important fortifications from the Swedish superpower era.
