I did the trail in the opposite direction because it's nicer that way. You go straight into the forest and don't have to walk along the road first.

Well signposted, you will find a small climb to a spring off the main path. The water is tested and safe to drink. A great refreshment with lots of minerals.

Note: the "Volcanic Valley" is a paid offer. The current price is 65 NZD per person. It is worth every dollar. I am convinced that if the offer were free, then this very exciting location and the habitat for the diverse flora and fauna would be destroyed in no time by masses of visitors.

Located at the southern end of Lake Rotorua, Sulphur Bay showcases Rotorua's famous geothermal environment. Here you'll find great views over Sulphur Bay and an information board.

This road links Hongi's track with State Highway 30. It's a beautiful road on the eastern shore of Lake Rotoiti. There's a playground, BBQ, toilets, benches and little bays. Great place to stop for a picnic.

Lovely spot to stop at and admire this clear lake. There’s a small sandy bay with rocks you can sit on. Good swimming opportunity too.
