As a result, the loess soil loosened and was able to sink by several meters in some cases due to erosion, mainly due to the effects of rainwater. Sunken roads are biotopes of a very special kind with sometimes extreme environmental conditions.

The Spatschlucht was formed around 1800, when the above-ground mining of heavy spar, also known as barite, began. The white spar powder was used as an additive in the manufacture of paint and paper. All in all, barite was successfully mined in the area for almost 140 years until 1939.
