Nothing remains of the Hilzenstein ruins today. They were located on the rock face, which was once accessible by a wooden ladder, but is now inaccessible. However, a beautiful sgraffito by the painter Theodor Ganz can be seen. He created it in 1940 while on duty at the observation post—out of boredom. The motif depicts a legend about a young poacher who, under a new moon, saw a snow-white stag with magnificent antlers. This 13th century castle, perched on the cliffs overlooking Mariastein, seems to come straight out of a fairytale. The building houses a youth hostel. It's a wonderful place to stay just 15 kilometers from the town of Basel.
