I am very surprised and impressed by the size of Wilhelmsburg, Fort XII; I hadn't expected that. The 200 m x 130 m castle was built between 1842 and 1849 as the centerpiece of the Ulm Federal Fortress. The citadel could accommodate 6,951 men, and the inner courtyard covers 1.3 hectares. The history of its post-military use is also interesting. Everything is well documented on site.

The Ulm Fortress Trail initially leads through the spacious grounds of the Wilhelmsburg. The construction site at Prittwitzstrasse/KönigWilhelm-Turm can be bypassed on a narrow (but sometimes slippery) path.

Beautifully situated in the forest with a great circular path and path into it. Very well preserved and highly recommended. 👍🏻

You can smell history here

The back part of the fort is particularly exciting. There you can walk around the old battlements. But be careful, nothing is lit or secured there. Access at your own risk.

Fort Albeck was built on Saffronberg between 1846 and 1859. There was room for a maximum of 1,340 soldiers. It is the largest external fort of the Ulm federal fortress complex.

Well-preserved castle complex

The work XXXIV of the federal fortress Ulm, the fort lower Eselsberg is inconspicuous in the middle of the residential area Eselsberg. Components of the fort are a surrounding rampart with a powder magazine in the right wall and a throat battery in the left wall, a dry ditch running all around, a double caponier, a hollow traverse and a strong mortar battery in the Saillant and a reduit in the middle of the throat side. The movement is constructed almost square so that the flanks are missing. The reduit reaches at both ends as traditors over the gorge wall into the gorge. When the works were modernized in 1880, the hollow beam was covered with earth and the reduit was given a side exit into the factory yard. From 1901 an ammunition plant was set up on the right Kehlgraben.
