The Eulenschlucht was long considered the longest Gieser. However, the digital terrain model shows that the longest Gieser extends 200 m east of the Eulenschlucht and is 8.2 kilometers long. The area around the Eulenschlucht is a protected area according to Section 29 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

A characteristic landscape element in the Muskau fold are the Gieser. These are sharply cut valleys with no drainage. The word is derived from the Wendish word jezero = swamp. For further information see the board at the Muskauer Fold Arch Geopark Office.
