The recreational area consists of a 200 square meter rustic wooden shelter. There is a spacious covered barbecue area in the immediate vicinity. Users also have access to solid sanitary facilities. In an adjoining room there is a counter with a sink with hot and cold running water and a refrigerator. Other facilities include marquee furniture and mobile windows for the shelter. Thanks to the power connection and permanently installed lighting, your event does not have to end when darkness falls. The large parking and camping area round off the offer. The rental fees for public commercial events are €120, private events cost €60. Local users only pay half the rental costs. Electricity and water are billed separately according to consumption. When using the barbecue, an additional cleaning fee of €10 is charged. Of course, the site and its facilities must be left completely clean. A deposit of €60 is charged for security. This is a site that was inhabited by people thousands of years ago, as can be proven by archaeological finds. Visitors of our modern times are invited to stay at least for a short time. Some will certainly be happy to take advantage of the opportunity offered here after the climb.

To be honest, the name leaves me a little perplexed: why did someone back then come up with the - to me incomprehensible - idea of naming an ore mine in the Hunsrück after the deity Apollo from Greek mythology, and the god of the sea at that?

Hindenburglay Viewpoint and refuge In the middle of the forests of the Briedeler Schweiz hiking area, halfway up the mountain, lies the Hindenburglay viewpoint. A small pavilion sits on the rocky spur that protrudes from the steep, wooded slope of the narrow Moselle bend of the Zeller Hamm. Only the narrow hiking trails provide access to this wonderful spot. We sit in complete silence in the shade of old oak trees and enjoy the view down to the Moselle flowing past with its steep slopes covered in vines and the houses of Briedel crouching in the narrow valley, while a flag flutters gently in the wind above us. The pavilion was built in 1927 by the Eintracht Briedel men's choir and has been maintained by the mixed choir ever since. It serves as a refuge in the center of the hiking trails that were laid out in 1926. It was given the name Hindenburglay in memory of the great Reich Chancellor. Beautiful, sturdy shelter for all occasions. Worth gold in the area when the weather is bad.

"The Hindenburglay is a vantage point in the middle of the forest area "Briedeler Schweiz". The certified circular hiking trail "Seitensprung" leads past here. A far-reaching view over the Moselle valley and the Zeller Hamm rewards the hiker for the steep ascent on the narrow path along the high slate rocks typical of the Moselle . The pavilion, which stands on a rocky spur protruding from the slope of the Moselle and invites you to rest, was built in 1927 by the Briedel male choir (today a mixed choir)." The naming was a tribute to the Reich President Paul v. Hindenburg. "... of our aged national hero. So that the memory of our Feldmarkschall, the pride of the German nation, may never be forgotten.” (Roman Siweljow, University of Koblenz-Landau, 2015) https://www.kuladig.de/Object-View/KLD-244498

The Apollo Mine (1858 - 1941) The actual development of the mining field did not take place until 1891. In the decades that followed, work was only carried out here sporadically. In 1909 an explosives storage room was built in the tunnel, which is still very well preserved today. In 1917 rails were laid in the already 140m long tunnel. By 1920, when the pit was closed due to lack of funds, 110 tons of ore had been mined. At that time 13 workers were employed here. The following period of operation lasted from 1937 to 1941. The ore veins were around 0.2 m thick, irregular and discontinuous. In 1939 the pit was auctioned off and went to Stolberg Zink AG based in Aachen for 500 Reichsmarks. After a short period of operation, the Apollo mine finally came to an end in 1941. Source: text information board
