8月 18, 2024, Castor Cave
As mentioned before, the path is no longer maintained. In addition to the vegetation, the steep slope and loose rock are particularly problematic. In many places it is also difficult to see where the path goes (the path is not marked on any digital maps) and it is easy to get lost on the impassable slope. It is very dangerous to walk on and therefore not recommended. The Castor Cave is also more of a large niche in the rock and not really worth the risk of fighting your way down there. There should be clearer warnings at the Kompus-Käppche about entering the cave, or the path should be repaired, as the cave is advertised on a sign and there is only a tiny note saying that the path is closed.

With the two Mosel slate mines Katzenberg (Mayen) and Margareta (Polch) of the company I. B. Rathscheck Söhne KG, Moselschieferbergwerke, the largest slate production in Central Europe was located near Mayen in this region with - according to their own statements - a market share of 80%. The Margareta mine near Polch-Nettesürsch was in operation until 1996. It was accessed with a 485 m long conveyor ramp in the form of a helix, which enabled truck transport from underground. The water tunnel of the Margaretha mine of the Rathscheck mining company in Nettesürsch was driven into the mountain up to the shaft in 1925. The water is channeled into the Nette. The 220-meter-deep Margaretha mine has had a conveyor shaft since around 1900 and was closed in 1986. From 1992 to 1996 it was operated with a serpentine tunnel as a slate conveyor ramp, which could be used to load lorries with slate.

Caves bear witness to the former slate mining. You can shine a flashlight into the caves. I would rather not crawl in because of the danger of falling rocks.

The water wheel is part of the "water tunnel of the Moselle slate mine "Margareta", Nettesürsch. The mine, which now belongs to the Rathscheck Schiefer Group, has been in operation since around 1900. The water tunnel was built in 1925 by Trimbser "Kaulemannen" to the pit in the mountain drifted During the Second World War, it also served as a shelter for the population during bombing raids. It symbolizes in a special way the importance of slate mining for the people of Trimbs and their history in the last century. In 2011, the tunnel entrance, which had been buried for decades, was uncovered again in weeks of manual work by Trimbser "Kaulemannen" of modern times. The water from the tunnels of the "Margareta" mine joins the Kellbach and shortly thereafter flows into the Nette. Today, the tunnel area on the edge of the Nette Schieferpfad invites you to linger.”

I almost drove past it because the trail is very flowing there. But I'm back again to look at the cave. ☺️

The way from the Kompus cap to the Castor cave or the Castor cross is no longer officially released. This part of the "boxwood hiking trail" used to be, but it is now different. The path is partly overgrown and buried by rubble and ends on the Moselle in an underpass of the crossing railway line. Enter at your own risk! The text on the information sign at the Castor cave, which is difficult to decipher, reads: "Many legends are told about Saint Castor, the best known is that of the salt miracle. Salt was a precious commodity at that time and was weighed against gold. When Saint Castor still lived in his cave, he had a garden on the river bank with vegetables "Flowers and medicinal herbs grew. One day a ship laden with salt sailed upstream. A rumble of thunder announced an approaching thunderstorm. St. Castor offered the boatmen a pinch of salt. They only had mockery and ridicule for him. Then a huge one rose Thunderstorm and the ship threatened to overturn. In their distress the pagan sailors begged St. Castor for help. The saint knelt down and prayed for the people who had just mocked him. The storm and ship and crew miraculously subsided were saved. To commemorate his work, a large cross was erected near the cave in the years that followed. "

Keep your eyes open on the way otherwise you’re over, especially interesting for children, so children will be further motivated 😊
