This shell (water reservoir) was artificially created and has probably served as a water point since the Middle Ages for the old road, which led from Nuremberg via Plech and Auerbach to Eger. The dirt road here in Plech, which is inconspicuous today, is also known as the "Eisenweg" and was once an important long-distance trade connection, on which the people of Plech, whose medieval iron smelters existed as early as 1285, brought their products to Nuremberg. Even Emperor Charles IV, who visited Auerbach five times from 1363 to 1378 probably passed the Ernsthüll and perhaps left his horses here soak. The Ernsthüll, which was almost completely silted up, was at the end of November 1996 exemplary by the government of Upper Franconia and the forestry office in Pegnitz restored.
