The history of Berum Castle: It is unclear exactly when construction of the castle began. The first documentary evidence dates the chief's castle to the year 1310. In this year, a member of the Syrtza or Sytzen family, which has its ancestral home on the forerunner of today's castle, is named as the chief of the Norderlande. It is not known how long this family had been residing here at that time. In the 15th century the Cirksena inherited the castle. In 1443, Count Ulrich I had the existing castle expanded into a palace with a three-wing main and outer bailey and celebrated his wedding here on June 1, 1455 with Theda, the granddaughter of his great rival Focko Ukena. Since then it has played an important role in East Frisian history. In 1475–1481 Alf, the son of Count Gerd von Oldenburg, was imprisoned at Berum Castle after an invasion of East Frisia. Lütetsburg Castle is a moated castle that was rebuilt in its present form in the 1960s after a devastating fire: With thick walls, a deep moat and two towers. The heraldic animal – a stone lion – watches over the castle residents on two pillars next to the access bridge. Berum Castle is a moated castle and is located in the district of the same name (Burgstraße 1) in the East Frisian municipality of Hage in the Aurich district in Lower Saxony.

Incidentally, the walls are the Lütetsburg Castle.

Moated castle with a beautiful green area. It is worth stopping there.

Nordeck Castle was built in 1868/1869 under the landowner Edo Friedrich Peterssen. Peterssen died in 1900 as a bachelor on the property. On May 18th, 1949 the castle burned down to the ground. The building was then rebuilt in different ways, is privately owned and cannot be visited.

The adjacent forest can be easily roamed by bike on some paths.
