For centuries, the Hessian-Thuringian state border has run across the summit region of the Kielforst, with a section of border stones dating back to the 16th century. During the Cold War, it was part of the former inner-German border; however, its death strip ran about 500 m east of the summit region; only a narrow border control path was built along the current border.

The Kahle Berg is climbed during a hike on the P21. More precisely, a short and crisp ascent path that makes it clear which geological rock layer you are hiking on. A barren, reddish-colored stone hill, with sparse grasses and bushes. You should take the detour to the edge of the hill and enjoy the beautiful view.

The Kahler Berg is called "kahl" for a reason: it is a nutrient-poor Keuperhügel on which only undemanding herbs and grasses grow, which, however, have become very rare these days. This makes this hill a geological feature.

The mountain is not that bare at the top, the way up here is definitely worth it. The Göringer Stein is considered a legendary place. A castle of the same name is said to have once stood on its summit. The monogram C A, the year 1878 and a crown were carved into a stone on the south side - it is a symbol of honor and a "gift" for the then father of the country, Grand Duke Carl Alexander, for the 25th anniversary of his reign in 1878. Since the Middle Ages, Zechstein ore (sand ore and copper slate) has been mined in the Eisenach area and also at Göringer Stein. The short climb is worth it. From here, depending on the vantage point, you have a view of OP Point India (US or FRG side, today Hesse) and the Ifta border tower (GDR side, today Thuringia).

The inner courtyard is well worth seeing with the Palas, the cistern, its half-timbered buildings and the medieval castle garden. Everything is renovated and beautifully prepared.
