To be or not to be ;)...

Several hiking trails meet at this oak tree. That's why a hut was built here.

Charcoal burning is an ancient craft that is now almost extinct, but in the past it was a decisive factor in the industrialization of entire regions: the blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, depended on charcoal to reach the operating temperature necessary for melting ore. As a result, entire regions were once completely deforested by charcoal burning, and it is only thanks to later reforestation that forests have grown again and nature can be seen.

After successfully converting a dilapidated construction trailer into a spacious charcoal burner's wagon in 2011, we are now starting the charcoal burner's hut project. The location and appearance were decided after intensive consideration by the association, the forestry office and the town of Boppard. It will serve as a catering room for us on charcoal burner days. On the other 355 days of the year, the extra rustic building is available as a resting place for hikers on the "Middle Rhine Via Ferrata" dream loop, the Rhine Castles hiking trail and the Saar-Hunsrück Climb. The Hedwig oak is also called the angel oak. Named after Hedwig Humperdinck (wife of VVV member Engelbert Humperdinck). - Lumpy trunk, branches from 4m high, 6 main branches at 8-10m high, sessile oak. The refuge is located on a small hill directly on the Vierseenblick path and only a few hundred meters away from the Köhlerhütte.

Next to the stately Hedwig's oak tree there is a beautiful shelter on the side of the path.

The charcoal burner association keeps the old charcoal burner tradition alive - once a year a charcoal burner is set up - great and thank you!
