The Nöthnitzbach is a right-hand tributary of the Kaitzbach. It originates in Bannewitz and flows through the towns of Gostritz and Mockritz, south of Dresden. In Gostritz and Mockritz, it receives five significant discharges of rainwater and mixed sewage, which significantly increases its water flow here. The Nöthnitzbach therefore roughly doubles the discharge of the Kaitzbach at its mouth. The course of the stream has remained unchanged since time immemorial. In the towns of Welschhufe, Nöthnitz, and Mockritz, it has been partially dammed or piped. In Bannewitz, a storage canal with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters and four smaller stormwater retention basins (flood retention basins) were built between 1994 and 2000. Following the experience of the 2002 flood, the construction of another flood retention basin in Nöthnitz became necessary (2006).

Rabenauer Grund. Info: Picturesque landscape, the riverbed of the Red Weißeritz, the Weißeritz Valley Railway steaming through the valley, benches and shelters inviting visitors to linger, and much more. The valley has been a nature reserve since 1961 due to its flora and fauna, including rare species.

The hiking trail through the Rabenauer Grund along the red Weißeritz is fantastically beautiful and easy to walk. You are accompanied by the sound of the source river.

The riverbed of the Rote Weißeritz meanders through a picturesque landscape from Freital-Coßmannsdorf towards Rabenau and Seifersdorf. This V-shaped valley, which is up to 80 metres deep, is known far beyond the city as Rabenauer Grund and has inspired works of art by famous painters such as Johann Alexander Thiele, Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter. The bizarre rock formations and landmarks, to which various legends and events are attributed, are particularly striking. Some of these are explained on waymarks and signs (for example Einsiedlerfelsen, Predigtstuhl, Nadelöhr, Goldstampfe, Nixentump, Pferdetump, Planwiese, Trompeterfelsen). The valley has been a nature reserve since 1961 because of its flora and fauna, which include rare species. Source: https://www.freital.de/Kultur-Tourismus/Ausflugsziele-Information/Rabenauer-Grund/

It's impressive to see these stairs. The small bridge that can be seen in the pictures is not accessible, but that doesn't matter.

For all railway enthusiasts, I recommend taking the steam locomotive from Hainsberg to Dippoldiswalde. The bikes go in the parcel wagon and you can enjoy the snorting and pounding of the old locomotive through the narrow Rabenauer Grund. Once you're at the top, you cycle back down to Hainsberg in the same way. If you want to avoid the stairs (approx. 80m) before Rabenau, you can turn right onto Mühlweg just before the bridge (but it's steep). Otherwise, the whole route is also suitable for children and families with grandma and grandpa. It's always slightly downhill, and tired or swollen feet can always cool off in the red Weißeritz. Bring a picnic backpack and blanket and in summer bring your swimwear for a dip in the Malter dam - a wonderful swimming lake. There are wonderful beer gardens at the Rabenau and Cossmannsdorf train stations and, with a bit of luck, you can admire the next steam locomotive. For me, this route is a dream in any season...
