A sunken road is a path that has been cut into the surrounding terrain up to 10 metres deep by centuries of use by wagons and livestock as well as run-off rainwater. Wikipedia

The Leimener Klinge, a deep gorge, runs between the Amerikanweg (a wide forest path) and the parallel, “wilder” path. At the point marked in the highlight, a rope-secured path leads across as a replacement for the wooden bridge that has been destroyed several times.

In the ravine you can clearly see how the path dug into the soft layer of loess - a fertile, mineral-rich soil - that was blown in from the west during the cold periods of the Ice Age. The loess on the steep walls provides a habitat for wild bees and wasps. They made the holes in the walls.

How are ravines created in loess areas? If a path leading uphill is used with heavy vehicles, small depressions are formed first. When it rains heavily, these become water drainage channels and drag the earth with them. The path deepens over the years. The sunlit slopes are what makes the ravines so valuable. Only here can animals and plants (some of which have become rare) live, which need warmth and lime-rich, dry soil. This ravine is one of the few of its kind near Wiesloch that is still undisturbed. The height of the loess walls is impressive when you walk through the ravine. You feel like you're in a tunnel ...

A sign reminds of the "Klammbrücke" built here, which led over the "Leimener Klinge". The bridge often had to be renovated due to putrefaction on load-bearing elements - but recently the communities of Nussloch and Leimen could no longer agree on the tried and true cost sharing. For this reason, the bridge was dismantled and replaced by a path that now leads through the blade. Source: Leimenblog (https://bit.ly/3g30wcs)
