The Kaltenhof is 100 m above the Main, within sight of Schweinfurt, on a mountain spur and the southern foothills of the Schweinfurt Rhön. This hill is bounded in the south by the steep valley of the Main and in the west by the deep valley of the Meerbach, in which the Schonunger district of Mainberg is located. In the east, the hill is bordered by the Steinach valley with the main town of Schonungen and in the northeast by the Hausen mill stream with the Schonung district of Hausen. In the north, the mountain spur runs into the Schweinfurter Rhön, which is largely uninhabited here, first covered by fields and then by large forests.
