The “Mainaue bei Augsfeld” nature reserve is an important European breeding area for native bird species and a resting area for migratory birds. Rare and typical floodplain habitats and animal species of European importance are also still widespread in the area. Natural, nutrient-rich lakes have formed in the area of former river loops, which were separated by the dynamics of the river. But such contrasting habitats as fens and dry sandy grasslands can also be found alongside riparian forests and meadows. Bird species such as the sandpiper, little ringed plover and the great egret feel at home in this varied area. An adventure trail enables ideal observation of this rich bird world. The Kaltenhof is 100 m above the Main, within sight of Schweinfurt, on a mountain spur and the southern foothills of the Schweinfurt Rhön. This hill is bounded in the south by the steep valley of the Main and in the west by the deep valley of the Meerbach, in which the Schonunger district of Mainberg is located. In the east, the hill is bordered by the Steinach valley with the main town of Schonungen and in the northeast by the Hausen mill stream with the Schonung district of Hausen. In the north, the mountain spur runs into the Schweinfurter Rhön, which is largely uninhabited here, first covered by fields and then by large forests.

Large lake with a small island in the middle and several ponds with a reed belt around it. Here you can see many species of waterfowl.

Unfortunately the tower was closed. I would have liked to have had the view over the protected area.
