12月 6, 2025, Steyr Old Town
Steyr's Old Town is one of Austria's most atmospheric historic city centers. Situated at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers, it combines a medieval urban structure with well-preserved Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings. Around the town square with its magnificent burgher houses—including the famous Bummerlhaus—narrow lanes, courtyards, and squares unfold, reflecting the former prosperity of this iron-producing city. High above, Lamberg Castle sits atop the walls of the ancient Styraburg, the city's origin. A visit to the Old Town leads past characteristic facades, across bridges to the riverbanks, and to viewpoints offering particularly evocative vistas of the historic ensemble. Overall, Steyr's Old Town presents a harmonious blend of history, architecture, and picturesque urban ambiance.

Bernhard von Losenstein had the current castle built in 1515 and gave it the name "Losensteinleiten". When a Turkish army under Kassim Pasha made the area unsafe in 1532, the castle suffered greatly. It is said that a hunter defended himself with many guns and shot a Turkish leader. This heroic act frightened the Turks and they fled. Between 1550 and 1570, the castle was enlarged by Georg Achaz von Losenstein. His wife was called Christina von Bergheim. The family died out with Franz Anton von Losenstein in 1692. The property passed to the Princes of Auersperg and their successors until 1950. From 1955 to 1993, Losensteinleiten Castle was owned by the Camillian Order, which ran a private high school with public rights until 1976. From 1978 to 1983, the Upper Austrian state government housed an agricultural college for girls. From 1985 to 1993, the Camillians ran the St. Kamillus retreat and education center in Losensteinleiten Castle, with a focus on the training and further education of people working in the service of the sick, especially in the denominational hospitals in Austria.

If you are planning a tour of the surrounding hills/mountains, a trip around the city is also a must - many picturesque places and motifs. Here a hillside bridge runs below Lamberg Castle directly along the Steyr between the Wehrgraben and the Steyr-Enns estuary

The castle itself is currently not open to the public. However, the Venetian ballroom can be rented for private events. The palace chapel, which has been restored since 1998, is also available for trade fairs (e.g. smaller wedding fairs).

A fascinating building that is unfortunately privately owned and cannot be visited from the inside. However, there is still a bathing house that can be visited during the opening times of the adjacent Tierpark Haag.

In the 16th century, the Lords of Losenstein had an existing moated castle from the 15th century converted into a Renaissance palace. At the beginning of the 21st century, the building housed a nursing home. In 2015, the developer Georg Spiegelfeld-Schneeburg acquired it, who then put it up for sale again. The complex also includes a large garden with a castle pond and the mausoleum 400 meters further north. In between there used to be the castle park, but there are no remains of it. The once wide moat around the moated castle has long since been filled in, but slight depressions can still be seen in the terrain.

The Lamberg Castle, which stands above the confluence of the Steyr and the Enns, goes back to the Styraburg as a predecessor. The property was owned by the Counts of Lamberg from 1666 to 1938, which is how the castle got its name. The Styraburg was first mentioned in a document in 985. However, it burned down in 1727 and was rebuilt by Johann Michael Prunner. In the middle of the 18th century, the rule of the castle was the largest manor in Upper Austria. In 1938, Vollrath Graf Lberg sold the castle and its lands to the German Reich. The buildings and land have been managed by the Austrian Federal Forest since 1961. There are a number of legends surrounding the founding of the former castle. Alpine ibexes have lived in the former moat since 1988.

The first known mention of the chateau, which was still a castle at that time, can be found in a document from 1282. The castle was later expanded into a Renaissance chateau. The castle itself is currently not open to the public. The landscape garden in the zoo is open to the public (with admission), the actual palace gardens are not open to the public.
