The Old Gattendorf Castle is a mighty two-wing building with a core structure dating from around 1600. The rusticated portal in the seven-axis main front dates from the 17th century and the giant Ionic pilasters from the second half of the 18th century. In the 19th century, the castle was "degraded" to a granary, used as such until the Second World War and later converted back into a castle. The castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. More on the history: http://www.kulturatlas.at/aut_b/page/00081078.htm

The original castle was named on the occasion of the wedding of the Hungarian King Bela IV's son to Kunigunde of Brandenburg in 1264. Around 1870 the estate was sold to the Batthyány-Strattmann family. The doctor Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann, who was beatified in 2003, ran a hospital here from 1902. Repairs to the castle began in 1966. The rear part of the old castle was largely destroyed by a bomb during the Second World War. There was no more recovery. Attempts at renovation were soon abandoned in 1966. The castle remained in ruins. Only the front part was inhabited for a long time. It is privately owned. The original castle was named on the occasion of the marriage of the son of the Hungarian king Bela IV to Cunigunde of Brandenburg in 1264. The castle was destroyed in the war between Rudolf I of Habsburg and Ottokar II of Přemysl in 1270/1271. The successor building from the 14th century was called Castrum Kuchhe in 1363. From 1974 to 2008, the palace housed the Ethnographic Museum, which displayed a permanent collection of folk art from Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as current special exhibitions.
