The castle was built in 1682 by Heinrich von Sonnenberg. This approximately 20-meter-long building faces the valley, consists of two residential floors plus a roof structure and is surrounded by a rectangular wall with two garden pavilions. It is privately owned and not open to the public.

NB! You walk a lot in open areas, without shelter. Better not when it's very hot! Other than that, a nice walk!

(Not to be confused with Trachselwald Castle nearby!) The sleep lock is in the tower. We stayed and had breakfast well and cheaply. Next to the castle is a mini brewery www.proBIERmi.ch and a farm with calf rearing.

At the outdoor exhibition in Melchnau you pass the Grünenberg ruins.

Beautifully restored castle tower with a deep preserved well and many information boards. Ideal for picnicking in the woods with fireplaces (firewood provided) and covered benches and tables. Toilet facility available. The ascent can be made on foot from "Allmendstrasse" or by bike via "Neuhaus" on the dirt road.
