A truly beautiful castle with a moat all around. Not accessible, but still worth seeing.

At the beginning of the 13th century, Hadmar II of Kuenring had the castle town of Weitra built. Since its founding, Weitra held the central military, administrative, judicial, and ecclesiastical functions in the so-called "Districtus Witrensis" (District of Witrensis). It was also a central market town and refuge in times of war. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt into a magnificent Renaissance palace according to plans by Pietro Ferrabosco. Beautiful historic building in a great landscape.

Ehrendorf Castle looks back on a history spanning almost 600 years. It was built by the Arndorf family and was first mentioned in documents in 1427. In 1619, Ehrendorf Castle was destroyed by imperial mercenary troops. The current building and design dates from around 1619. The castle is privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. Tip: turn into a side street - you have a better view of the property from the back. The rococo palace was built between 1774 and 1777 on behalf of Count Johann Anton Joseph Harbuval-Chamaré. The architect Josef Jäger designed it in the style of French summer residences. That is why it is also called “Little Schönbrunn” or “Bohemian Versailles”. The castle complex consists of the entrance gate with an adjoining French garden, the administration building on both sides, the grain store and the English park with the sandstone statues. Uphill are the ruins of the Gothic castle, which was demolished during the construction of the castle and served as building material. The castle was restored in 1997 and opened to the public in 2001.
