According to local legend, the pool is bottomless, and home to a sinister mermaid referred to as Jenny Greenteeth. The Doxey Pool mermaid waits to lure unsuspecting waters into her bottomless pool, to their deaths.

The source of the river is located over 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level in the Staffordshire moorlands, near the gritstone escarpment of the Roaches. After flowing downhill for a few miles it reaches Tittesworth Reservoir, a major supplier of fresh water to the Potteries and Leek. After it leaves the dam at Tittesworth, it flows into the ancient market town of Leek, where it was used to aid the manufacture of dyes that were used in the town's textile and silk industries.

Excellent savoury and sweet options at decent prices! A tap for drinking water and bike storage outside, and plenty of place for seating inside and out.

Part of the Leek Branch of the Caldon Canal the pool allows boats to turn around before the tunnel. The Churnet Way long distance walking trail and NCN 559 follow the canal towpath past the pool.

Steep ascent going up to circa 20 deg but highly recommended to keep your fitness up 😁

Perhaps the aforementioned mermaid has claimed a victim or two because the hi-vis brigade have seen need for a fence to be erected all around the pool. My dog raced ahead in anticipation of being able to have a splash but was gutted to find it fenced off. Bit of a shame

Red Loop is a great loop to walk!!! One incline that's a little bit steep, other than that it's easy to navigate. Would suggest some walking shoes or similar.

Great cafe stop, lovely walks.

We loved the ride alongside Rudyard Lake. I think the walk along the opposite side would be even more lovely, but not suitable for cycling. We had bacon baps and cups of tea near The Dam by Rudyard Lake on the way back. Great value and a lovely view.

Plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the view as the Lake is quite immense

The main canal path is really well surfaced however this section over the tunnel has a number of steep steps and pointless gates and obstacles, while there is a path to avoid the steps all of the gates are locked so you’ll still have to struggle with the bike

Needs some serious upgrading to make this properly accessible to most riders
