I can only agree with the last tip. We have had less than stellar service recently, not felt especially welcome and the cycle provision is not good. As recommended head onto the Dovecote at Moreton. If you get a coffee the cafe is the best for quality but you have to drink it in the Cafe. When we asked to have our coffee in a flask they were not keen. Sculptures and grounds are lovely, let down by cafe

5月 16, 2025, Fort on the Lake Folly
The "Fort on the Lake" in East Lulworth is a folly, a building built for decorative effect rather than a practical purpose, located on the edge of a lake created for model boat testing. The lake itself was built by Joseph Weld in the 1830s and the fort was built in 1851. The fort was originally intended to house a model 12-gun brig of war, but it was sadly dismantled and no longer exists. The folly remains as a decorative feature on the wild lake.

An important watering hole for wildlife and the resident Dartmoor ponies, Rushy Pond buzzes with dragonflies and damselflies, whilst the pond’s surface is often disturbed by a newt surfacing for air or a grass snake on the hunt. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/dorset/hardys-cottage/things-to-see-and-do-at-hardys-cottage

Did you know that this lake was built in 1837 for model-boat testing for the Admiralty? Furthermore, on this shore, you can observe the fort that was also constructed shortly thereafter.

An outstanding sculpture park set in twenty-six acres of beautiful Dorset countryside. Created as an oasis for art lovers and collectors alike by renowned sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wife, Monique. Superb cafe and restaurant, no entrance charge if just visiting the cafe, shop, gallery etc

Rushy Pond is home to a wealth of wildlife including Grass Snakes, Palmate Newts and Dragonflies and Damselflies. On hot summer days, you may often find our resident ponies in the pond taking a cooling dip.

Best avoided if you are looking for a sandwich or light bite lunch, best to carry on to the Walled Garden 2 miles away at Moreton, lovely freshly prepared sandwiches etc and very friendly helpful staff. The cafe is highly pretentious and was a complete waste of time serving only four or five main meals ~£12 per meal with no indication of accompaniments or drinks menu. If you want sandwiches or something light it is pre-made pre-packed from a takeaway pantry and there is nowhere to sit down to eat them. The bike racks are useless wheelbending hoops , not even bolted down and hence failing my insurance requirements for an ebike to lock to an immovable object. I am sure the sculptures are stunning unfortunately we were so put off we decided against viewing or returning at a later date.

If stopping for refreshments and wanting something on the snack side go the takeaway but if having a coffee use the cafe - much better than the help yourself machine.

Lovely grounds - you can pay full entrance and take it all in. Or just stop for a break - really nice views to go with good food. £££. Note - no dogs and no one aged under 14 admitted.

Super, nice quiet and tiny roads. This village is set in the South Dorset chalk downs and has a substantial history of smuggling goods from France into the UK. Really nice, quaint pub here called The Sailor's Return. Closed on mondays and Tuesday mornings.

http://www.sculpturebythelakes.co.uk Can now comment on the full Lakes experience as we enjoyed an afternoon there. We really enjoyed walk around looking at the old fishing lakes and artwork - very relaxed although a bank holiday not too busy. River Froome pretty impressive too. Really nice lunch. ££ not cheap at £10 a head. Note: No dogs and no Under 14s permitted allowed in.
