The Sequoia or Giant Redwood would have been planted as one of the specimen trees of the Brandon Hall estate. Edward Bliss made his money selling gun flints during the Napoleonic wars and used it to buy and create Brandon Hall and the surrounding land. Many of the unusual trees planted in what is now Brandon Country Park and the wider Thetford Forest are a legacy of this.

This lake will be the first one you see upon arriving in the area near the visitor center. It's the largest in terms of surface area, and numerous water activities such as sailing or canoeing take place on it. The trail that runs along the side of the lake offers excellent views at some points.

In addition to being able to grab something to eat or drink, at this center, you can get information to make the most of your visit to Lackford Lakes. They also have a shop where you can even rent binoculars if you've left yours at home. Remember that dogs are only allowed on the red trail and must be on a leash; guide dogs are the only ones allowed on the other trails and in the center. The RSPB has done an amazing job in turning these former carrot fields into flourishing reedbed habitat. Keep a look-out for birds including kingfishers, cranes, bitterns, marsh harriers, bearded tits, reed warblers and sedge warblers. The site is also home to mammals such as otters and water voles, as well as many species of insects.

West Stow Country Park boasts 125 acres of unspoilt and wildlife-rich countryside. There are nature trails, heath and woodland walks to explore, as well as two bird hides and a bird feeding area. You can also explore nearby Lackford Lakes, a 106-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and the Anglo Saxon village.
