The Stainborough Castle folly is an 18th-century "sham ruin" built on the grounds of Wentworth Castle, to give the impression of ancient family history. Originally featuring four towers, only two remain after storm damage, and visitors can climb a spiral staircase. Beware of the dragon at the top!

The only Grade I listed parkland and gardens in South Yorkshire, Wentworth Castle Gardens is home to no fewer than 26 listed buildings and monuments. The estate was originally known as Stainborough Hall. Thomas Wentworth, the 1st Earl of Strafford, purchased it in 1708 and built a new house and gardens to rival the grandeur of his cousin's home, Wentworth Woodhouse.

Look out for the deer

Hidden behind the Church of St Nicholas. Legend has it this place is haunted. You can't really tell from the photo but the Motte is fairly steep and is easier to get up than down!

This is not far from the Church of St Nicholas and the Old Horns and is a bit of a hidden gem. The remains of the motte can be climbed (and should be) to appreciate just how hard it would be to storm one of these defensive structures. On top of the motte would have been a wooden keep which has long since gone. This and the church indicate the importance of this area around 900 years ago.
