Nice coffee stop at Oxborough Hall

Covering over 8,800 acres (3,560 ha), the Wash National Nature Reserve is the largest nature reserve in England. Its saltmarshes, mudflats and open skies are a treat for birders. Keep your eyes peeled for heron, shelducks, curlews, oystercatchers, dunlins, redshanks, skylarks and reed buntings.

To be fair, it’s a cut above the average village duck pond, and there’s a pub opposite for a Coke and a packet of crisps.

We did a one hour walk from Pinecones camp site to watch the knot spectacular. Well worth the 5am start.

In the care of the RSPB, Snettisham is well known amongst birders for being a wonderful wader watching spot. Especially during the autumn and winter during high spring tides. Ouse Washes is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an internationally-important wetland habitat. The linear site, which stretches from St Ives in Cambridgeshire to Downham Market in Norfolk, serves as a flood storage area and is often under water in the winter. Parts of the Washes are managed by the RSPB and are home to many species of birds.

Willows Nature Reserve is a lovely urban greenspace that comprises a duck pond, grassland, reedbeds, woodland and scrub. A triumph of community effort, local school children were involved in the planting of thousands of daffodils. The reserve’s damp grassland contains species such as Yorkshire fog, red fescue and creeping buttercup.

Great Massingham a picturesque village with one of the most impressive greens in the county. Several large ponds dominate the village; some of which have their origins as the fish ponds for an 11th century Augustinian Abbey.
