Great walks there is many ways to get to the Beacon, it's very cold up there and the ground was rocky wet and very muddy, good boots needed, you can see Dartmoor Exmoor and Somerset on a clear day.

The building has an amazing history which you can read about below. The facilities are comfortable but basic. The central living room has a 5 ring gas hob, charging points for phones and a very effective wood burning stove. A plentiful supply of logs is included. There are solar powered lights but no mains power. The restoration was completed to modern building standards and the accommodation is extremely well insulated. There is hot water, a shower, flushing toilet and three spacious rooms. The building is bookable for one group of people at a time, and will sleep up to six. There are 2 sets of bunk beds in one bedroom and a double bed in the other. All beds are made up and towels etc provided. for info go to www.stantyway.com For more than 80 years, Brandy Head Observation Post has stood sentinel over the cliffs at Stantyway Farm. Opened in 1940, the building was the range observation post for the top secret Gunnery Research Unit, based at RAF Exeter. At Stantyway Farm, the renowned Professor Sir Bennett Melvill Jones perfected a revolutionary aircraft gunnery sight, which helped ensure allied air superiority on D-Day The Observation Post has always been an important landmark and a popular rest stop for walkers on the South West Coast Path, which runs past the front of the building. In recent years this iconic building was becoming derelict and in danger of being lost. In 2020 we restored the building in partnership with our landlords, Clinton Devon Estates, and are offering basic but comfortable accommodation to walkers and anyone who would like to stay there. Facilities for passers-by have been much improved with better benches, more information about the building's history and a mains water tap. These are freely available for users of the South West Coast Path and will always remain that way.

Culmstock Beacon provides a stunning viewpoint south to the River Culm valley and the historic village of Culmstock. The Beacon is on Black Down

High on the southwest point of Blackdown Common is Culmstock Beacon. It is one of a chain of Elizabethan beacons used for lighting fires to warn of advancing enemies, for example, The Spanish Armada. The beehive-shaped structure was built of flint. It was rebuilt in 1870 after the collapse of the earlier one. Culmstock Beacon is a wildlife haven with stunning views, particularly in the late summer when the bell-heather is in bloom. Access via public bridleway.

Looking out across the Culm Valley, Culmstock Beacon is a wonderful place to take in far reaching views. You can see almost to Exeter on a clear day. The beacon is the flint hunt which was part of an early warning system against invasion during Elizabethan times. Most notably warning against the Spanish Armada. Fires were lit on the beacons when ships were seen, the series of beacons reaching from the south west to London. You can go into the beacon, which was rebuilt in 1870 and look up at the sky where the fire would have been lit.

Curious place with two nooks, roof looks to have been replaced or at least timbers replaced recently. I wonder what this was built for...

Due to the growing number of Covid -19 cases, the Walker's Hut will remain closed for July and August 2021. This is to ensure our visiting school groups and campers do not mix with the general public. The Grab&Go will remain open. Everything that The Walkers' Hut offered but in a Covid Safe manner. Seating will also be available.

Fabulous little cafe just off the Tarka Trail and C2C routes. Great cakes, super friendly and plenty of bike parking. Ended up here after attempting to go into John’s Deli in Instow and encountering rudeness, extremely expensive and pretentious cafe offerings and no real seating options. Highly recommend the very slight detour to the beach car park for this cracking little cafe, also situated just across the road from the public toilets. Apparently open 7 days a week til 1800.

This building is a great place to stop and you can even camp here overnight, which is what we did. You can close the barn doors but there is a large window on the side of the building without any glass. However, it wasn't windy as it’s sheltered by a lot of trees. Even though it rained really hard, we didn't get any rain coming through either. The roof is made of tin so hearing the raindrops coming down was really peaceful. There is a pub about a mile up the hill, which is a good place to have food and a few beers before settling down. This hut is situated on the coastal path; it is an absolute gem.
