Rock Island Trail State Park was created after Missouri State Parks took over the 47.5 miles of trail between Pleasant Hill and Windsor. Making this the 93rd, and newest, park in the system. Missouri State Parks are also working with state and local agencies to complete the additional trail to connect the Rock Island Trail to the Katy Trail.

The Chilhowee City Park offers hikers and riders on the Rock Island Trail a few primitive camp sites. There are water and toilets available at the trailhead and the Hometown Convenience Store is a well stocked little shop (closed Sundays) that is staffed by very helpful locals.

This section of the Rock Island Trail can make you feel like you're the last person on earth. It passes through treelined corridors and crosses empty dirt roads on the way between the two small rural towns.

This stretch of the Rock Island Trail is a good introduction to Rails to Trails. The path is flat and well maintained and you can find running water, campsites, and toilets in Windsor and Leeton. This stretch of trail is a great option for a day hike or part of a longer overnight excursion.

Probably my favorite section. A deceptive chill straight leads you to a downhill and off camber left curve which is full of loose dirt and rocks. Assuming you don’t wash out the rear end like I did the first time you’re headed to the first challenging downhill full of loose shale surrounding big embedded rocks nothing too sketchy. A short technical climb comes next and then the trail mellows out while you catch your breath. Finish with some short up and downs across dry creek beds and a nice twisty section after the two wooden bridges. Tons of fun.
