This is one of many access points for Timber Coulee Creek in Vernon County, Wisconsin. This one is particularly helpful to know about when you are getting long in the tooth.

At this point, you have reached the terminus of the Gander Trail and Swamp Trail. There are several benches from which you can view the park's wetland and woodland ecosystems. When we last visited, the service road to the park was snow-covered and closed, but we were able to snowshoe to the overlooks.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge constructed this roadside overlook for visitors to observe the abundant wildlife along the vast floodplain of the Mississippi River. The overlook offers a safe parking area away from the busy Highway 35. Informational posters provide details about the Mississippi River, as well as the waterbirds and ducks commonly seen at the site. Permanent telescopes are also available for public use.

This tip is quoted from the stone historical marker at the site: “Site of Red Bird’s Village June 28, 1827 First Battle of the Bad As was fought opposite, between 37 Winnebagos, on Minnesota and Wisconsin Islands, and crew of keel boat Q. H. Perry grounded on sandbar. Fatalities: 4 whites, 7 Indians. The same day Red Bird killed Lip Cap and Gagnier at Prairie Du Chien. He died in prison there.”

The historic marker at this site tells the story of the Battle of Bad Axe more beautifully and poignantly than I ever could. "Battle of Bad Axe After holding off his pursuers at the Battle of Wisconsin Heights (about 1 1/2 miles south of present Sauk City) Black Hawk led his people over unfamiliar country toward the Mississippi. In the meantime, the Army alerted Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien. When the Indians reached the Mississippi, they found an armed steamboat blocking escape. The Battle of Bad Axe fought near here, August 1-2, 1832 ended the Black Hawk War. Driven into the water by their pursuers, the Indians - warriors, old people, women and children - were shot down or drowned as they tried to escape. Black Hawk succeeded in getting away but was soon taken prisoner. Later, when asked about his ill-fated venture, he said simply: “Rock River was a beautiful country; I loved my towns, my cornfields, and the home of my people. I fought for it.”

The Veterans Memorial Park consists of 10 acres located along both sides of Coon Creek lying north of the village of Coon Valley. The park contains a paved walking path that is approximately 1 mile in length. The path crosses the creek twice, connecting one side of the creek to the other. There are 12 handicap fishing pads located along the walking path. The fishing pads are unique to this area and draw many physically challenged anglers. The Coon Creek is known for its excellent fishing and much of the creek from Chaseburg to Coon Valley and through Timber Coulee has been developed and maintained for fishing.
