During construction work, remains of a Roman house (domus) were discovered three meters below ground, including pilasters and a road leading toward what is now the Banque de France. The building's reconstruction was made possible after the Duke of Guise repaid a debt of 22k livres to the city.

The Reims City Hall has served as the seat of municipal government since 1499 and features a square design with four wings surrounding a central courtyard. Originally built between 1627-1636 by city architect Jean Bonhomme, the building was completely destroyed by fire during World War I in 1917 and subsequently reconstructed, with President Gaston Doumergue inaugurating the rebuilt structure in 1928. The south-facing facade is crowned by an octagonal bell tower and features an equestrian statue of Louis XIII trampling two prisoners.

This is a unique town hall, and one that's right in the city center. An impressive building, built in 1927.

I highly recommend this brasserie/restaurant! In the morning, people meet for coffee or wine, and lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. We only had drinks, but the food looked good.

A beautiful drive into town – the roundabout with its fountain and flowers. Doesn't that make your heart sing? A lot is being done here to make the town look beautiful.

The Reims Town Hall, also known as the Hôtel de Ville de Reims, is an impressive example of Renaissance Revival architecture and has a rich history: 🏛 History & Architecture Construction started: Nicolas Lespagnol laid the foundation stone in 1627; the building was designed by architect Jean Bonhomme. The first section was occupied in 1628, and the large façade was completed around 1630 Stylistic features: Symmetrical 19-bay façade with three floors, decorated with classical column orders (Doric on the ground floor, Corinthian on the upper floor, and Ionic on the towers), combined with an octagonal bell tower. Above the entrance is a half-relief of King Louis XIII on horseback .Extensions: In the early 1820s, the square layout was completed with an additional pavilion on the Rue de Mars (by 1825) War damage & restoration: Heavily damaged by German artillery in 1917 during the First World War. Reconstruction began in 1924 under the direction of Bernard Humbold, also involving Roger-Henri Expert, Paul Bouchette and sculptor Paul Berton. The rebuilt building was officially reopened on 10 June 1928 by President Gaston Doumergue .🏷 Monumental status Recognised as a monument historique by the French government since 1862 . 🎨 Statues & decoration On the front facade is a statue of Louis XIII on horseback, centrally above the entrance (nice close-up can be seen in one of the images).

The town hall, partly built between 1627 and 1636 and completed in the 19th century, has decorative elements in the Renaissance style: antique orders and niches. The twisted columns and the curled pediment reflect the Baroque spirit of the period. The sloping roofs and high chimneys are typical of the 17th century. The bell tower is inspired by the bell towers in the north. Equestrian statue of Louis XIII on the central pavilion. Coat of arms of Reims on the balcony.
