Gaustatoppen is several hundred meters higher than the surrounding mountains, and during the last ice age the peak rose above the ice sheet like a nunatak. Frost heaving over thousands of years has caused the mountain's surface to crack into blocks that now lie loose, forming a "block sea". But that's just on the outside.
