The Prefecture of Haut-Rhin began construction of its new building in 1862. Their former building, in the hotel of the Abbey of Pairis (now the town hall), where it was founded since its foundation in 1800, was too cramped. The new building, built on the same model as the Prefecture of Haute-Marne, was inaugurated in 1866. Designed in the Louis XIII style, there is a central flanked by two side wings. The building was used by the German government during the annexation of the region by Germany and then was used again by the Prefecture of Haut-Rhin in 1918. The prefecture's hotel was destroyed by fire in 1938, bombed in 1940 and used again damaged during fighting for the liberation of Colmar. The prefecture overlooks the park of the Champ de Mars, whose arrangement is the cross of the Legion of Honor. In 1540 Duke George of Wurtemberg had the old castle demolished to make way for the current castle, with a serrated roof, typical of 16th century architecture from the Rhine region. The castle was bought by the city in 1861 and was given various functions (school, museum, etc.)
