The Koglbauer family's Pfaffensattelhaus has long since seen its best days; the once popular guesthouse on the Alpine pass between the communities of Rettenegg and Steinhaus am Semmering has been falling into disrepair for years. It has now become a kind of "lost place". "It looks catastrophic, my heart bleeds every time I see the house. But it used to be so good," laments Rettenegg's mayor Johann Ziegerhofer. From the Pfaffensattel, a mountain pass (1372 m) between the towns of Rettenegg and Steinhaus am Semmering, an unpaved toll road that is only open in summer leads to the summit.
