Mozart's sister Maria Anna is here, as is Clemens Holzmeister, the architect of the Great Festival Hall. The dead have been buried here for more than 1,300 years. The view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress is just as unique.

6月 29, 2025, Steinerner Kaser Cave

Source: The Salzburg Legend Book - Josef Brettenthaler, Matthias Laireiter - Verlag der Salzburger Druckerei, 1976, p. 73 The legend surrounding the Mittagsscharte refers to a time portal (cave portal) that is said to open there every few years on the Assumption of Mary (August 15th). In fact, there is a cave called the Steinerner Kaser in the middle of the Mittagsscharte, where a light phenomenon can be observed at 2 p.m. on August 15th and June 21st. A so-called day vent illuminates the cave at midday. This light spectacle becomes even more impressive when the sun and clouds alternate, and you can experience a pulsing sensation inside the cave. Unfortunately, we were only there on June 28th and were unable to witness this spectacle.

After visiting the power place Johanneshögl, I followed the signs and looked for the Grasslhöhle, where we were once born. It is wonderful and it is the best way to feel the spirit and energy of the holy mountain Untersberg🙏

It is located between the Salzburger Hochthron (1,853 m above sea level) in the north and the Raucheck (1,891 m above sea level) in the south at an altitude of 1,671 m above sea level. A. right on the border between Austria and Germany. Crossing the Untersberg from the Berchtesgadener to the Salzburger Hochthron is one of the most beautiful tours in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The varied path leads over the extensive high plateau with its huge sinkholes - an extraordinary landscape that is second to none.

At the southern end of the Mittagsscharte, a few meters north of the crossroads, directly below the "Steinerner Kaser" stone hut (currently leased from the State Speleology Association in Salzburg) is the entrance to the cave of the same name. The Salzburg ethnographer and historian Franz Valentin Zillner writes about this: ...(The) Mittagsscharte, from which one enters the large cave, the Steinernen Kaser, through which all legends say the entrance to the interior of the mountain is located.. .

Very beautifully landscaped cemetery. The St. Peter Cemetery is most likely the same age as the St. Peter Monastery itself, so it dates back to around the year 700. But there was already a cemetery in this area during the migration period. At first the cemetery was only intended for monastery members. The first documentary evidence is the granting of burial rights by Archbishop Konrad I of Abensberg on March 22, 1139. The cemetery was probably smaller then than it is today or had a different shape, as the monastery of St. Peter stood. The oldest surviving gravestone in this cemetery is that of Abbot Dietmar († 1288). The tombstone bears the inscription † VI. K. Martii. Obiit. I Dietmar. Abas. S. Pet. A gravestone with the oldest family coat of arms and the inscription Hie leit her Man Gaerr... dates from 1300 (both gravestones are now in the cloister of the monastery). Always wear sturdy shoes! The path is impassable and requires surefootedness. It might help some people to have sticks with them.

The Margaret Chapel is a chapel in Salzburg's old town, located in the southern part of the St. Peter's Cemetery. It was rebuilt in 1491 to replace a previous chapel. Abbot Rupert V. Keutzl had the chapel built between 1485 and 1491 to replace the Amandus Chapel. Since its re-Gothicization under Georg Petzold (1864), it has been considered one of the "purest" Gothic buildings (with several Neo-Gothic additions) in the city of Salzburg. These later additions include the stained glass windows. The altar is also Neo-Gothic; it features a Gothic Madonna (slightly reworked in Neo-Gothic style) and four old Gothic relief scenes: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Death of Mary. The gravestones date from the 15th to the mid-19th century. The wooden epitaph on the left wall for Augustin Tondio († 1596), the secretary of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, was created by the Salzburg court painter Kaspar Memberger. There is also a large stone with a life-size figure of the knight Virgil Uiberacker († 1532), a relief for Elisabeth Kuen from 1606, and a unique monument for H. Chr. Portenschlager from 1687. The Margaret Chapel, along with all other buildings in the monastery precinct of St. Peter, is a listed monument.

A highlight of St. Peter's Cemetery are the catacombs carved into the Mönchsberg. Their origins date back to late antiquity. These mystical rock caves served both as hermitages and burial sites. The entrance is located next to the graves of Nannerl Mozart and Michael Haydn. After the first 48 steps is the St. Gertrude Chapel, dating from 1178, and another 36 steps up is the St. Maximus Chapel. Admission is free with the Salzburg Card. https://www.salzburg.info/de/sehenswertes/kirchen-friedhoefe/erzabtei-st-peter-friedhof-katakomben

The oldest Christian cemetery in Salzburg is the Petersfriedhof located in St. Peter's Abbey. Located at the foot of the fortress hill, it is now a popular attraction in the old town. You will find peace and seclusion here. The idyllic place bears witness to a long past, which today appears well-cared for and with tradition. The best time to visit is in the morning - there are only a few visitors here. The cemetery of St. Peter is one of the oldest burial places in Europe - older than the Archabbey itself. Many celebrities of Salzburg were buried here, including Mozart's sister Maria Anna von Berchtold zu Sonnenburg, also known as Nannerl, and Michael Haydn. In the middle of the St. Petersfriedhof you will find the Gothic Margaret Chapel, which is now also used as a place of burial. The idyll appears attractive to tourists - in complete seclusion from the hustle and bustle of the city center, a place of peace and contemplation is offered here.

This cemetery is next to the cemetery of the Benedictine Abbey Nonnberg the oldest Christian burial place in Salzburg. It was already used as a burial place in post-Roman times. Due to its location at the foot of the fortress hill and its “picturesque” terrain, the St. Peter's cemetery was a preferred subject of painting and poetry in the 19th century. In the cemetery of St. Peter there are so-called catacombs carved into the mountain. They did not serve as a burial place and are probably of late antique origin. The Gertraudenkapelle and the Maximuskapelle can be found in it. A stroll through the cemetery will reveal numerous well-known Salzburg names. But famous foreigners are also buried here, such as B. General Harry J. Collins (born December 7, 1895, Chicago, Illinois, USA; † March 8, 1963 in Salzburg), who was also married in Salzburg during the Second World War and to Irene Gehmacher from Salzburg.

The Grasslhöhle is known for the energetic forces that are supposed to work here. The creek nearby has so much clear water that it used to be taken by mounted leaders for the bishops in Salzburg. The water comes from the Untersberg and has a constant temperature of 4 - 5 degrees. With thunder roars down the valley.

In the middle of the Petersfriedhof stands the Margarethenkapelle. This small church is a uniform Late Gothic hall construction. During archaeological excavations in the church were found the pre-Romanesque remains of the ancient Amandus Chapel, which was built by St. Rupert. Renewed under Archbishop Arno, it was restored after a fire in 1127. Abbot Rupert V. Keutzl had the chapel built from 1485 to 1491 in honor of St. Margaret. In the 18th century, the chapel was equipped with a baroque high altarpiece by Pietro Antonio Lorenzoni, now in the Long Gallery of St. Peter. Under the artistic direction of Georg Petzolt, the Margarethenkapelle was regottised in the 19th century. Source: www.stift-stpeter.at/de/friedhof/index.asp?dat=Margarethenkapelle
