The fortress was originally a Muslim fort, which passed into Christian hands in 1198, remaining in the hands of the Order of Saint John in 1215, although it was conquered with the help of the Order of Santiago. Legend has it that after taking the fortress, the image of Our Lady of Peñarroya was found, venerated ever since by the residents of Argamasilla de Alba and La Solana, who share the patron saint.

Peñarroya Castle has its origins as a Muslim fortress, which would pass into Christian hands in 1198. It is currently owned by the Argamasilla de Alba City Council, and is eminently touristy. During the months of April and September there are Christian activities that include pilgrimages from the towns in the area. Admission is free and it's open to the public, so check it out if you're around.

The castle is in good condition and you can visit its interior. It has beautiful views of the reservoir and the dam. The entrance to the castle is in an esplanade where there are picnic tables and a canteen.
