Beautiful view of the Gleichberge mountains

Steinsburg is the popular name given to the remains of a Celtic oppidum on the Kleiner Gleichberg in southern Thuringia in the district of Hildburghausen near Waldhaus near Römhild.

St. Michael's Chapel was once located on the plateau of the Kleiner Gleichberg near Römhild. It was a pilgrimage chapel first mentioned around 1517. Its history dates back to the 8th/9th century. Its hall church was probably built in the 12th century, although only the foundations remain today. The mountain was already a fortified Celtic settlement (Steinsburg) in pre-Christian times, and the chapel was later built on the sacred site, which was partially destroyed by basalt mining.

This highlight is a section of the route from Reurieth to Dingsleben. The Gleichberge Mountains, as dominant elevations, shape the landscape and offer many photo opportunities, as is the case here just before Dingsleben.

The townscape is characterized by a multitude of listed half-timbered houses in the Henneberg-Franconian style. Many of these houses feature beautiful gables and ornamental corners. The school and community center, as well as the two bakehouses, were also built in this style. House No. 23, the oldest building in the village, is the only one to have survived the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War and the period following it. Dingsleben had approximately 315 inhabitants before the war, and only two afterward. The two old village fountains, which now splash water again after extensive restoration, are traditionally decorated during the Easter season.
